When we started Breton Bikes 20 years ago there was little choice in lightweight tents. There were a few specialist tents using curved poles to make domes or tunnels, and the traditional variants on the ridge pole tent, the former being very expensive, the latter almost as expensive and a pain to use. That means sites where people read one page and then leave. So please, when you’ve finished reading just click on any other link on the site before leaving – it would be a big help – otherwise I may be forced to remove such articles from the site and that would be a shame Now we are deluged with designs and almost without exception they all use curved poles of one form or another — the traditional ridge tent being all but dead. The trouble is that this embarrassment of riches covers such a range of designs and prices that the unwary would-be camper can end up buying something totally unsuitable or unnecessarily expensive.
A Hydrostatic Head rating determines how waterproof a fabric is. All tents will meet the British Standard for waterproofing, the minimum rating for a tent to be waterproof is 1, mm. The higher the rating, the more waterproof the tent is. The flysheet of a tent may have a lower waterproof rating than the ground sheet. It should be noted that the rating does not take into account wind driven rain, which requires a tent with a rating of at least 2, mm, such as the Venus 4 Man Tent , to keep water out.
Double-skin pop-up tent with porch storage area can be popped up and pegged down in seconds. Features Hydrostatic Head of mm for advanced rain protection.
Stuart, First of all very nice job on the tent. I’m just thinking out loud here. Is it at all possible that being set up so close to that beautiful water source had anything to do with the condensation that you experienced inside of your tent? I assume that the high vent is on the head end of your tent. In the picture of your campsite, which way was the wind, if any, coming from? Was there any one place inside the tent where the condensation was the heaviest?
If there was any wind and it was coming from the unvented foot end, your tent could have become an evaporator of sorts. This is nothing new. The combination of your own body heat and exhaled breath being warmer would condense on the inside surface. So like I said this is nothing new. Yours is a beautifully done tent with what seems to be a very adequately sized high vent.
I specifically wanted a 1 man tent to save weight and pack space, as I have to put rather a large part of my weight to carrying cameras and photographic glass, it pays to make as much weight saving as I can elsewhere. This tent, like Vango is famous for its designs for mountain tents and this one is no exception as well as being designed for mountain marathons The Vango Ultralite when packed up it has a size of 48cm x 18cm and weights in at grams so will easily fit into a rucksack or strapped to the top, under the cross bar of a bike, or on the rack, its light enough to carry across the top of a camera bag too.
The tent is a nice discrete dark green, which may attract to much heat in the summer months and is at least not an eyesore on the countryside, I hate visual pollution. The built-in ground sheet is black as are the storage bags which might pose a problem pitching the tent in the dark.
The scientists also opted to tackle the problem of condensation in the one-man tent by using a breathable liner on the blanket that can draw moisture away from the camper’s body.

If you get the ground sheet then you can pitch the fly only which is pretty spacious and a good compromise between tarp and tent. Very good at what it does. It gives far more room than a conventional bivi and has space for your kit as well, but it is very lightweight and so features are slim. My first impressions are that it has been very well designed, there are some great features like vents and easily adjustable mini guys. It’s very quick to put up, just fire your trekking pole into the ground and drape the wisp over the top.

Here are some frequently asked question answered about how to find the best tent for you When buying a tent, buyers need to think about what types of weather the tent is going to be used for. Often times, tents are made for warmer weather but don’t explicitly state this on the label. If your plans might take you camping in the winter, then consider looking for a tent that is specifically designed to withstand high winds, snow and sleet, and cold temperatures.
Winter tents are often more durable and hold heat in better. Similarly, if your plans might take you camping in the summer, look for a tent with a rain fly. In inclement weather, the rain fly will prevent you and your gear from being drenched. In great weather, you can still look up at the night sky without worrying about waking up with mosquito bites. There are also tents that perform for all weather, but take into consideration what you might need, first.
